Blockchain technology, responsible for bitcoin and the cryptocurrency trend, may be the the change healthcare technology has been looking for. Consulting firm Deloitte believes this technology has the potential to “transform healthcare because it places the patient at the center of the healthcare ecosystem as well as increases the security, privacy, and interoperability of health data.” In fact, there are already many planned healthcare-focused digital tokens and coins being launched and have already launched. These include BlockMedx for physicians and pharmacies to help increase security and accountability of prescription drugs; Dentacoin for the dental industry to make changes to directories, review board procedues, and payment systems; and Medicalchain, which uses blockchain technology to store and share health records securely, allowing for easy and safe transfer or sensitive information between providers and patients. These are just a few examples of the cryptocurrencies that could shake up the healthcare sector. If even a few become successful, the healthcare world in the years to come will make a dramatic transformation in technology.
